Since 1956, the Hans Christian Andersen Award has recognised living creators whose complete body of work has made an important and lasting contribution to children's literature. The Author Award began in 1956; the Illustrator Award followed in 1966.

Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was a Danish author whose stories have continued to inspire readers across generations. His name is now associated with one of IBBY's international awards for children's literature.

The regulations changed so that the author's complete body of work was taken into consideration rather than a single title. Meindert DeJong was the first recipient under this approach.
