The Selangor Children’s Book Fair, set to take place from July 24 to July 28 at the PKNS Shah Alam Complex, promises to be a delightful haven for young readers and budding artists alike.
This year’s fair is particularly special as it will feature a stellar lineup of renowned Malaysian cartoonists, each bringing their unique talents and beloved characters to life.
Here’s a glimpse into the magic they’ll be offering:
Rahim Muda, affectionately known as Imuda, is a luminary in the Malaysian entertainment scene. His multifaceted career spans cartooning, comedy, and acting, with iconic series like Imuda, Yushimura, Mat Gelap, Mat Som and Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu under his belt. Imuda is set to captivate audiences with his new collections, which will be available at the fair.
His passion for local culture is evident, and he believes that the book fair is a golden opportunity to rekindle interest in comics and their creators.
“People are still interested in reading comics. This book fair brings back the attention to comics and the people behind it. This is good as it can attract new readers and fans,” he says.
Imuda will also be conducting a cartoon drawing workshop, a special treat for aspiring artists.
“There are many new talents. But to attract Malaysian readers, they must draw based on Malaysian context and bring back local flavour, both in content and style,” Imuda emphasizes.
Fans can look forward to a special edition of the Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu comic series, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the famous sitcom.
Shamsaimun Ezil, better known as Sam Along, is a veteran in the animation and comic industry with 30 years of experience. He is bringing the iconic Keluang Man franchise to the fair, offering visitors a chance to reconnect with Malaysia’s own superhero.
“We want to revive interest in Keluang Man, especially among the young. For them to know we too have our very own superhero,” Sam explains. He invites fans to engage with the team behind Keluang Man and learn about the character’s evolution.
“Comic scene today has seen big growth, but there is still space available. Malaysians are keen to read local content with good social messages laced with wit and humor, Malaysian style.”
Sam also shared exciting news about an upcoming Keluang Man movie, set to hit cinemas next year, adding another layer of excitement to the book fair.
Azrul Aman: Champion of Local Talent
Azrul Aman, better known by his pen name Cengkerik or Maba, is a celebrated cartoonist and animation artist. His dedication to promoting local talent is showcased in his quarterly magazine, Kita Punya Cerita, which highlights Malaysian stories and sketches.
“For the fair, we are also bringing Buku Cerita Rakyat for children. This series is easy to read with colorful artwork,” Azrul shares.
His passion for nurturing young talent is clear, as he will be accompanied by his 8-year-old daughter, a budding cartoonist with her own book. “She is an inspiration for the children,” he adds proudly.
Fairul Hafiz Razali, the son of Pak Rizalman, creator of the beloved Bujal series, carries forward his father’s legacy with pride.
Known for his own impressive comic series and over 20 years in the industry, Fairul is set to bring a mix of nostalgia and innovation to the fair.
“For the book fair, I will be bringing some reedits of old issues to give a better and sharper look and change the covers to be modern,” Fairul reveals.
He will also present a special edition of Bujal, featuring some of his late father’s works.
“Come and see Pak Rizalman’s magic in creating Bujal. Some of my work will also be available. I will also be conducting some comic classes for the children. Don’t miss it!”
